Yesterday I drove Apache to Waterbury, Vermont to the Ben and Jerry Ice Cream Factory to meet Maureen and John, who were bringing Lola, a 2-year-old Keeshond female show dog who didn't care much for the ring. Maureen wanted to find a home where Lola can relax and become a companion, and we are so happy she picked us!

Apache needs a sibling, especially one who speaks "canine." They are both pretty excited, trying to figure out what these changes mean. Apache wants reassurance that he is not being displaced, and Lola, the newcomer, is trying to assert dominance by periodically draping herself on top of Apache. They look comical, even a little sheepish when I catch them trying to sort out their respective places in the household, especially since Apache at 46 pounds is a little large for a keesie, and Lola is small for the breed. They make a pretty pair, even if a little mismatched in the size department. Lola has more cream in her coat. Both have expressive eyes and faces.

At the moment they are both calm and quiet, facing each other as they lay on the top step outside the slider door that leads from the dining room to the back yard. They can monitor the squirrels nicely from there, and watch the birds come and go. Is it the eye of the hurricane, or have they really reached a truce?

I'm not sure whether our initial meeting place is a sign of what the future holds (more ice cream!), but we are LOL, Lola, that you have joined our family! We know you and Apache will love being B&B dogs (Yes, that definitely means Bones & Bellyrubs)! Welcome to the Inn, little girl!

Turkeys in the Straw

Apache got his first opportunity to meet and greet our flock of wild turkeys today, when 12 to 14 strutted and scratched their way across the back lawn. I had spread cracked corn in the tall grass beyond, where two of the turkeys had discovered it. The rest went for the scarcer but easier pickings under the feeders. Apache, exhilarated with his new-found sense of power to motivate flight, zig-zagged all the paths the bottom-heavy birds left behind. Happy Apache! Disconcerted turkeys!

Breaking In

Introduced Apache to J.C. Palermo, our wonderful veterinarian, friends and neighbors, including horses Ike, Boss and Shammy. Got his tags, license for his collar. Took several long walks and runs, which helped him burn off a lot of energy. He's a chewer and has adopted the brick fireplace as a favorite spot. Needs training but seems smart. Learning sled dog commands easily. Teaching him to speak on command more of a challenge. Hard to know who is breaking in whom -- we are adapting to each other, I guess. Bill wants to call him "Boll Weevil," can't imagine why. I've nicknamed him Fuzzbucket, Doodlebug, or "Patch."

New Fuzzbutt in the House!

We are the proud adoptive parents of a new 9-month-old purebred keeshond (pronounced CAYZ-hund) named Apache. This dog is also known as the Smiling Dutchman or the Dutch Barge Dog, for their origin in the Netherlands and their perpetually happy expression. Our little guy is about 46 lbs, a medium-sized dog and small for us, since our last two dogs were 65 lbs and 72 lbs respectively. He has a face like a grey fox, complete with the characteristic spectacles, a thick double coat of black, silver and cream fur, and the requisite tail that curls over his back. Joanna travelled to the Southern Tier to pick him up today from a lovely couple (Thank you, Emma and Mick!). When they arrived at 10 p.m., the first thing Apache found was a clump of Yoda's hair, which he promptly sniffed. It was a fitting if poignant way to enter what had been Yoda's domain until only two weeks ago. We discovered that Apache was born at Snow Angels Kennels, and that the Apache people are related to the Athabascan natives of Alaska. Somehow, even though he never met our two Alaskan dogs Yoda and Jupiter, it feels like they are related, that it is appropriate that Apache landed in our home. Welcome, Apache!

Severe weather in the area. Tornado watch from Noon - 6 p.m. yesterday. Heavy damage reported in Moira, Parishville, Colton & points south. Even so, potluck @ 6 p.m. here drew nice group eager to learn about Uganda: friends and neighbors, including a guest from Columbia, South America. Today we hosted another gathering that included a guest from India. The guests took a walk around the inn and down to the river, and saw a fawn! ... After lunch, we took our Ugandan guests to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, thanks to the generosity of another guest who paid their admission fee. We were happy to send them off with a few books from our library, some North Country maple syrup for their families to try for the first time, and a love gift for the homeless, provided by those who attended the potluck last night.

Still missing. Making calls. Jupi seen in town in neighborhood of Sabad's Restaurant & Laurie DuFresne's Hair Salon on Second St. Customer saw her around creek bed west of Sabad's. I found her laying on a bed of twigs by the water. She couldn't get up. Tony, owner of Sabad's, went down after her and rescued her. He's our Hero! ... We're so grateful to all who helped. I've never been so happy to clean up dog poop in our yard before!
